Town Clerk
The Town Clerk’s Office serves as the central information point for local residents, citizens at large, departments, boards and committees. The Town Clerk is the keeper of town records, the chief election official, a member of the Board of Registrars, Registrar for all vital birth, death, and marriage events occurring within the community and those events occurring elsewhere to local residents, serves as Burial Agent, serves as Super Records Access Officer and is the official keeper of the Town Seal. Administers the oath of office to all elected and appointed town officials. Purchases, maintains, tests and secures all voting equipment. Schedules, trains and supervises all election workers and voting precincts in accordance with state and federal regulations.
The Clerk's office maintains the local census and voter registration database, assists with verification of the Federal Census, maintains multiple data bases and issues various licenses and permits such as dog licenses, raffle permits, business certificates, underground and above ground flammable storage registrations, records and maintains Town Meeting votes pertaining to local acceptances of Mass. General Laws, Special Acts, general and zoning bylaws. Records oaths of office, open meeting and conflict of interest law receipts for local officials. Preserves permanent records such as births, marriages, deaths, marriage intentions, meeting minutes, planning and zoning board decisions and issues certified copies of these records upon request.
The Clerk's office works mainly under the direction of the Secretary of the Commonwealth, Attorney General Office's, Department of Revenue, in accordance with Federal Laws and Regulations, the Massachusetts General Laws, Special Acts, local Bylaws, rules and regulations, Selectmen and citizens of the Town of Barre.
REGULAR OFFICE HOURS
The office is open to the public Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Appointments are also available outside of regular office hours.
